IMPORTANT OF COMPUTER LITERACY BY ILCI

THE INFO LINKS COMPUTER INSTITUTE

PRESENTS

THE IMPORTANT OF COMPUTER LITERACY

Computer skill refers to the ability to use computer programs in an effective manner. Computer skills have become more and more important as companies have started to depend upon computerized technology to get almost every work done. Computer skills can help you to perform tasks in a better way that others in the work force cannot do. You can contribute your skills, when you have certain knowledge and are familiar with the programs that businesses use very commonly. You will have a better chance of being successful in a workplace if you are able to navigate computers and use common or specialized computer programs.

Computer training services are where a student learns by executing special training programs on a computer relating to their occupation. Computer training is especially effective for training people to use computer applications because the program can be integrated with the applications so that students can practice using the application as they learn.
Before searching for the right Computer Training course, the user should make a determination as to the type of learning they need. Do you want computer training courses on Microsoft Office? If so, determine if what particular part of the software suite you would like training on such as Microsoft Word, Access or Excel. You can then conduct a more thorough search for your particular need and find those companies that focus on those areas as you drill down these requirements. This in turn will give you a more qualified computer training course provider.

Let us see what counts as the essential computer skills as understood under computer literate:
Performing basic operations:
Starting a computer may be a very tricky thing to one who has never seen one. Using the mouse, managing various windows, alternating between the use of keyboard and mouse, minimizing windows, opening and closing files, etc can be daunting tasks for the uninitiated ones. In order to learn to use computers, as with any machine, one needs to acclimatize himself/herself first. First and foremost one should familiarize himself/herself with the parts and functions of the computer - in a similar manner you learn about the functioning of your washing machine or DVD player or dishwasher.

Word-processing: This is the most basic of all skills. It involves typing basically, but when using computers it deviates a little from the common typewriter. There is the enter key replacing the career movement and there are commands (simple ones) for paragraph, indent, spacing and so on. The best of word processing is that you can modify with ease any part of the text you entered. The word processing is the minimum one should know because it will be used in each and every application of computers.

Email:
The postal letter, though extremely sought after, is on its way out in today's world replaced by the electronic mail or as popularly known, email. The 21st century man does most of his communication through emails. Whether it is posting a CV for a vacancy, or applying for a job - the most common way and the best way is to email it. Email also enables you to keep in touch with all your near and dear ones in real time (instantly). You can send photographs, documents and video clips through email. This is another important and basic skill a computer literate needs to know.

Use the Internet:
The use of the Internet is too vast to be covered in the present article. However, no computer literate is complete without Internet knowledge. Computers and Internet is today almost one and the same thing and one cannot be mentioned without the other tagging along. One will need to harness the Internet in all types of work whether it is research on any topic or plain surfing for information. For this purpose you will need to know what is a search engine and how it works; what is a keyword and how it works; how to open a browser and how to use a link, etc. The Internet is like a huge shopping mall where you are required to navigate with the help of certain guidelines.

Use a Spreadsheet:
One will also need to use a spreadsheet of excel sheet for computing and chalking out financial plans. This is a must in any presentation and knowing the basics on how to use and read a spreadsheet will be extremely helpful to any young executive. As with others, this too will require a lot of hands-on practice and a little theory to master.

Create and use a Database:
One also needs to know how to create and use a simple database. There are million and one information points that one gathers and to be able to interpret it correctly and present it systematically one needs to be able to analyze the data received. Computers are best at throwing up accurate forecasts, analysis and organizing data in a legible and interpretable way; for getting these results you will need to feed in the data by creating a database and then knowing what command to give to ask the computer what analysis you want it to perform.

Create/ Use a Power Point or graphic file:
Every job involves some type of reporting at regular periods of time. The best way to make a presentation whether it is to your peers, subalterns or superiors is by using power point. Hence, one should the basics of this application as well. Side by side, one should know to use a graphic file whereby you can upload (post) pictures, graphs, images in any file (as well as power point files).

Printing of a document:
Whatever you learn to do, you will sooner or later need a hard copy ('hard copy' means 'on a paper' while 'soft copy' means 'electronic copy') and for obtaining that you should know how to print whatever you create with the help of computer.

Use of the peripherals:
You need to know what is a portable drive or a pen drive and how it is used; what is a blue tooth and how can be installed and used; what is an infra-red device and how it can be used and so on. Nowadays computers can be connected with wire and on wireless with your mobile. You need not totally master all the above but you should know sufficient not to look crestfallen when you are encounter the terms verbally or in writing.
The INFO LINKS COMPUTER INSTITUTE invite you to be computer literate.

I AM NOMINATED FOR FICTION WRITER OF THE YEAR

Do you know that feeling you get from being noticed when you think that you are far from getting nominations or awards? This is it!

When I was very young I used to be so DULL, as in, Chinonso Nwakaeme (chuks donchester) was so dull and inactive that teachers pitied my mom whenever she came to pick me up from school because they often wondered what a terror I must be at home.

Yes, I was a terror at home, I was always tearing papers, writing stories, drawing cartoons, gluing drawings to walls and endlessly trying to sneak out of the house to play. In school, I wasn't really considered the 'scholar', even though my teachers said that if I played less, I'd do better but I didn't care.

I was ME and if you didn't like it, 'go and hug transformer'. As I got into secondary school I knew what I wanted to be in life, 'an economist'. Huh? Wetin? What? That was the expression in my family member's faces, and teachers too as everyone knew that Chinonso might do well in the practice.

By the time we started proper essay writing in school, I always came out tops to the annoyance of some my teachers as they felt that the 'Best' in English or literature should be reserved for the quiet students and most times they scored me low.

In a nutshell, it took me time to acknowledge my talent in writing even after publishing series of short stories as a child (which was really through the effort of my parents especially my mom *thank you mommy* you help me most nights to complete the story). When I found that my mother wanted to help build my writing talent, I got more exicted to write, I started seeing myself as a writer.

I loved writing it was part of me. I decided to pursue my career towards that direction. I enroll for Creative writing school in USA and went for a certificate programme in writing.

Eventually when I started work, one day, I decided to start this 'blogging thing' that many people I knew was into. At first I started with Nwakaeme Chinonso's blog, which triggered other blogs I created. Two months later, I published several published work like: UNDERSTANDING THE THREE T’S TIME TALENT, TREASURE, THE VOICE OF AFRICAN CHILDREN, READING IS LIKE EATING JOLLOF RICE, HIDDEN IN A BOOK.

No one will understand how much this award means to me, it means that out of my restlessness as a child and my talkative nature as a young adult, 'something' was born. Now, I don't talk as much as I like to as I channel my talks into writing and so far, it's been very rewarding. The comments I see on my blog spurs me on and assures me that I am putting smiles on beautiful people's faces through my writing. However, I acknowledge that I am still a work in progress and with God on my side, I'll definitely get there. This nomination has given me the courage to spur on as I am certain now more than ever that I was called to be a Writer.

For the Nigerian Writers Awards, I was nominated under the FICTION WRITER OF THE YEAR which I believe is for my creative writing. It seems people have to vote and the judges have to choose as well but for the fact that I made the list, I am so excited.
